Maintaining the security of the U of A's data and systems requires effort and coordination among many groups within University IT Services, as well as the cooperation and input of all departments' technical support staff.
- The Security Group maintains a vigil, watching for all manner of security issues. When there is a compromise such as a hacked machine, or a DOS attack they are the first to respond. They also follow up afterwards to make sure the incidence cannot reoccur.
- The Help Desk is the department's front line of communication with the campus population, when there is a new virus or malware they are usually the first to know.
- From every network jack in every office and wireless coverage area to the T1 line and Internet2 pipe, Network Services administrates and protects the campus network.
- Network Client Services (NCS) is the team of technicians that look after security at the desktop level. From cleaning infected machines to managing the main antivirus update server, NCS will be there to return lost productivity due to spyware or virus attacks.
- Dissemination of information is the responsibility of the Info & Web Services group. They utilize avenues such as email listservs, web pages, free publications, and RSS feeds in an attempt to keep the campus informed of the newest IT security threats.
